The Battle for Leadership in Más Madrid Intensifies
The political atmosphere in Madrid is marked by growing tension within Más Madrid, the main opposition party in the region. This Saturday, during the commemorative events of Dos de Mayo, the notable absences of key figures such as Minister Mónica García and Deputy Emilio Delgado have highlighted the internal struggles that could define the party's future.
For the second consecutive year, regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso did not invite any representatives from the central Government to the events held at the iconic Puerta del Sol. This decision has been interpreted as a new chapter in the conflict between Moncloa and the Community of Madrid, especially following the Government's refusal to allow the Army to hold its traditional military parade.
As the 2027 elections approach, a recent poll conducted by Sigma Dos, published by EL MUNDO, reveals a clear division among Más Madrid voters. The survey indicates that 40% prefer García to run again as a candidate, while 30% support Delgado. Additionally, a significant 25% advocate for the Assembly spokesperson, Manuela Bergerot, to take on the leadership.
Despite the internal discontent, the numbers suggest that Más Madrid could lose its position as the leading opposition party to the PSOE. This situation is being exploited by rival parties such as the Partido Popular, whose spokesperson in the Assembly, Carlos Díaz-Pache, stated: "The left is tearing each other apart." This fragmentation within the progressive electorate could be crucial for the upcoming elections.
Despite the pessimism reflected in the polls, some leaders within Más Madrid maintain a defiant attitude. Manuela Bergerot expressed her distrust towards these demographic studies: "They always underestimate us," asserting that they are determined to lead the Madrid left again by 2027. On the other hand, Vox has also expressed its dissatisfaction with the current electoral results but is hopeful for a favourable change in future contests.
Not everything is discord; during the Dos de Mayo event, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of the PP and national opposition leader, was also present. Feijóo urged Ayuso to work together for the common good for both Madrid and Spain. In his statements, he emphasized that it is the Government's responsibility to support the autonomous communities and criticized President Pedro Sánchez for generating political tension.
