Isabel Díaz Ayuso denounces the lack of support from the Government in an emotional Dos de Mayo event

A call for unity and administrative support

In an emotional and reivindicative speech, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, addressed the attendees of the institutional event of Dos de Mayo, where she expressed her deep concern over the scant support her region receives from the central Government. This event, which commemorates the Madrid resistance against Napoleonic troops in 1808, became the perfect setting for Ayuso to lash out at the policies of the Executive led by Pedro Sánchez.

The relationship between the Community of Madrid and the Government has been marked by tensions for over a year. For the second consecutive year, no representative of the Executive was invited to the commemorative events, reflecting a significant rupture in relations between Moncloa and Puerta del Sol. During her speech, Ayuso questioned: “How many opportunities are we losing in these circumstances?” emphasising how every political response seems to be mediated by ideologies.

Ayuso also took the opportunity to highlight the cultural and social diversity of Madrid, describing it as “the most heterogeneous region that exists,” composed of various Spanish identities. Amid criticisms from parties like Vox regarding her openness to different accents and cultures, she reaffirmed her vision of Madrid as “the gateway to the entire world.”

The event was not only a space for political criticism; the Grand Crosses of the Order of Dos de Mayo were also awarded to several influential figures in various fields. Among the honourees were well-known figures such as journalists Fernando Lázaro, Javier Cid, and columnist Raúl del Pozo, who have left an indelible mark on the Spanish information landscape.

Closing her speech with a strong message, Ayuso stated that Madrid “will not be controlled by anything or anyone,” evoking the combative spirit of the popular uprising of May 1808. The regional president emphasised that “the Madrid society is another army that walks united” when facing challenges that threaten its freedom.
