A May 2nd Marked by Discord
This Saturday, the Community of Madrid celebrates its emblematic Second of May, an event that traditionally unites the people of Madrid but is overshadowed this year by political tensions. The regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has decided not to invite the central government, led by Pedro Sánchez, due to what she describes as a systematic boycott of the celebrations.
For the second consecutive year, the Ministry of Defence has cancelled the traditional military parade at Puerta del Sol, a decision that Ayuso considers an affront to the community. In her recent statements, the president asserted: "Until Sánchez's government stops boycotting the Second of May, that government will not be invited again." This situation has created a tense atmosphere between both administrations.
Despite the hostile environment, the political parties represented in the Assembly are invited. However, it is expected that the PSOE-M, represented by its spokesperson Mar Espinar, will hold its own event elsewhere to avoid conflicts. This move reflects internal divisions and electoral strategies that are beginning to take shape in anticipation of the elections scheduled for May 2027.
Amidst this political turmoil, Más Madrid is also facing its own internal challenges. The recent declaration of candidacy by Mónica García has generated friction with other party members, such as the deputy Emilio Delgado. Meanwhile, Vox is trying to avoid internal disputes following a recent crisis in its municipal group; key figures like Javier Ortega Smith are expected not to attend the event.
Despite the complicated political backdrop, the Second of May is also an occasion to remember and honour Madrid's history. The day will begin with a floral tribute to the heroes of the uprising against French troops in 1808. Subsequently, there will be an institutional event where the Grand Crosses of the Order of May 2nd will be awarded to several prominent figures such as César Lumbreras and Miguel Carballeda.
As the day progresses, the people of Madrid will be able to enjoy various cultural and recreational activities, including a musical show and an innovative drone display that will conclude the evening festivities.
