A new political era in Madrid
The General Secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has taken a decisive step in Madrid politics by announcing her intention to lead her party's candidacy for the regional elections in May 2027. This announcement was made during the central rally of the Spring Festival, an emblematic event that brings together party supporters and members, where Belarra did not hold back in her criticism of the current regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
In a passionate speech, Belarra expressed her firm conviction that a strong response to the Madrid government is necessary. “I have decided to head a candidacy for the Community of Madrid because I believe we must fight this battle with all our strength,” she stated before an enthusiastic audience. Her goal is clear: “to twist the arm of that unbearable bad person, Mrs. Ayuso.”
The purple leader did not hide her frustration with the current state of politics in Madrid, stating that she is fed up with what she sees as a lack of effective opposition. “I refuse to accept Ayuso's Madrid,” she declared, adding that she cannot accept a saturated healthcare system or a public education system in crisis. Her message resonated with attendees, who responded with applause and cheers.
Seizing the moment, Belarra also directed her barbs at other political leaders, criticising the PSOE for presenting what she considers “fourth-rate candidates” and questioning the proposals of other political formations. She asserted that both the PSOE and Más Madrid have given up on fighting for political leadership in the region.
This announcement marks a new chapter for Podemos and could be seen as an attempt to revitalise its image among Madrid voters. With this move, Ione Belarra seeks to consolidate her position as a key figure within the Spanish political landscape and regain lost ground against other political forces.
