A significant meeting in times of crisis
The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, held a meeting this Wednesday with prominent Cuban dissident José Daniel Ferrer at the emblematic Real Casa de Correos, the seat of the regional Government. This meeting comes at a critical time for Cuba, which is facing a severe energy and social crisis.
José Daniel Ferrer is known for his strong opposition to the Cuban regime for over two decades. His activism began to gain momentum during the well-known "Black Spring" of 2003, when he was arrested and sentenced to 25 years in prison for his dissident activities. After several years behind bars, Ferrer was released, but was re-imprisoned in 2021 and again in 2025. This latest experience led him to exile with his family in Miami, where he continues to advocate for human rights and freedom in Cuba.
Cuba is currently undergoing a severe energy crisis that has led the Government to acknowledge the lack of sufficient fuel reserves. The situation has worsened following the loss of its main oil suppliers, such as Venezuela and Mexico. This shortage has resulted in continuous blackouts that have reignited social protests on the island. Recently, at least 85 arrests related to these demonstrations have been reported.
Shortly after the meeting between Ayuso and Ferrer, it was revealed that Raúl Castro, brother of the late dictator Fidel Castro and a key figure in the Cuban regime, has been indicted in the United States for his involvement in the downing of civilian aircraft belonging to Brothers to the Rescue. This airstrike, which occurred in February 1996, resulted in the deaths of four people and now faces new legal repercussions nearly three decades later.
As tensions rise both inside and outside Cuba, international support for figures like José Daniel Ferrer becomes increasingly relevant. The international community is closely watching how this critical situation evolves as political leaders continue to discuss strategies to address the humanitarian issues affecting the Cuban people.
