On April 17, Madrid will become the stage for a significant event for Venezuelan politics and the defence of human rights. The city council, led by José Luis Martínez Almeida, has announced that it will present the Golden Key of Madrid to María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader. This gesture symbolizes not only a tribute to her bravery but also recognition of her commitment to democracy in Venezuela.
The ceremony will take place at the Casa de la Villa, where Almeida has expressed that she will receive a welcome befitting her importance. “The city wanted to give her the welcome she deserves,” said the mayor, who also highlighted that Machado is a global symbol in the fight for human rights. The presentation is scheduled for six in the evening and will include a series of honours.
Despite potential criticism that may arise from sectors such as Más Madrid and the PSOE, Almeida firmly defended this decision, arguing that “the figure of María Corina Machado transcends Venezuela.” The mayor recalled that there are historical precedents where individuals who are not heads of state have received this honour, which further reinforces his position on the matter.
Just 24 hours later, on April 18, another significant event will take place: a meeting between María Corina Machado and the elected Venezuelan president, Edmundo González. This act is scheduled to occur at the emblematic Puerta del Sol, a location filled with symbolism for Venezuelans living in Spain. On social media, Machado expressed her excitement about embracing González again and reuniting with her compatriots.
As these important dates approach, sources close to the regional government are working to finalise the details of the meeting between the two political leaders. This event is expected to be not only a celebration of democratic commitment but also an opportunity to strengthen ties between Venezuela and Spain.
