The call for an urgent solution
The situation of the Cercanías Madrid service has reached a critical point, prompting the Municipal Group of the Popular Party to request the censure and resignation of the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente. In a recent plenary session in the Centro district of Madrid, PP councillors expressed their concern over the progressive deterioration affecting thousands of users daily.
According to data presented by the PP, the year 2025 closed with a total of 1,521 incidents, representing a 240% increase compared to 2019. Of these incidents, it is highlighted that 40% are due to failures in the railway infrastructure and 22% to faults in trains and rolling stock. This situation has generated not only delays and cancellations but also a growing sense of insecurity among travellers.
The councillors argue that this crisis not only affects the quality of service but also endangers user safety. The lack of adequate investments from the Ministry of Transport and Adif is seen as the main cause behind this deterioration. Citizens have expressed their frustration over the recurring interruptions in their daily mobility.
One of the critical points mentioned during the plenary was the current situation of the Sol station, considered vital for transport in central Madrid. During 2025, this station has suffered several closures due to construction work, further complicating connections with other lines, such as the Gran Vía Metro station. Additionally, it is reported that these facilities are not fully accessible for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.
In response to this issue, the Popular Group has proposed a series of measures directed at the Ministry and Adif. These include the full implementation of the Cercanías Improvement Plan, as well as an Extraordinary Railway Safety Plan. A comprehensive audit is also requested to identify critical points within the railway network and an investigation into recent incidents such as the derailment that occurred in San Fernando de Henares.
As this political debate on the deficiencies of the Madrid railway system progresses, it is clear that both citizens and political representatives demand quick and effective responses. The monthly meeting to monitor the progress of the Cercanías Plan is seen as a necessary step towards a lasting solution to improve both the operability and safety within the railway system.
