The coalition's defence
At a crucial moment for Spanish politics, Manuela Bergerot, spokesperson for Más Madrid in the Assembly, has reaffirmed her party's commitment to the coalition Government. During a recent press conference, Bergerot rejected internal suggestions to leave the Executive, arguing that such a decision would only serve to "prepare the ground" for the far-right and the Popular Party (PP).
Bergerot's statements come after criticism from former senator Pablo Gómez Perpinyà, who had expressed on social media that the left cannot thrive within the current Government due to its "subordinate" position. Despite these divergent opinions, Bergerot defended the achievements made from within the Council of Ministers, citing a recent reform that reduces medication costs for low-income families as an example.
The spokesperson for the Popular Group in the Assembly, Carlos Díaz-Pache, was quick to respond to Bergerot's claims. In his statements, he criticized Más Madrid's refusal to consider leaving the Government and questioned its view on what constitutes a healthy democracy. According to Díaz-Pache, this stance reflects a desperate desire to maintain power at the expense of the general welfare.
Díaz-Pache also analysed recent electoral polls suggesting an imminent change in the Spanish political landscape. He stated that many citizens are willing to accept problematic situations like corruption in order to avoid significant political change. He described this situation as a "democratic anomaly," a direct result of the political legacy accumulated over more than two decades.
As political tensions intensify and possible early elections approach, both Más Madrid and the PP are preparing to face a complex electoral scenario. While Más Madrid seeks to consolidate its position within the Government and continue promoting social policies, the PP appears ready to capitalise on any popular discontent towards the current Executive.
