A unique gastronomic experience in the capital
The arrival of Pope León XIV in Madrid promises to be not only a significant religious event but also an unprecedented culinary opportunity. More than 50 restaurants, taverns, and cafés in the city will offer special menus designed exclusively for accredited journalists covering this historic visit.
The initiative, driven by the Community of Madrid in collaboration with various hospitality associations, includes dining options ranging from 8 euros, accessible to all budgets, to more elaborate menus that reach 85 euros. This variety aims to satisfy both those looking for a quick meal and those wishing to enjoy a more sophisticated culinary experience.
The participating establishments are mostly located near the iconic Puerta del Sol, where the International Press Centre will be established. This centre will operate 24 hours a day throughout the week of the papal visit, thus facilitating the work of over 2,000 journalists and audiovisual professionals.
In addition to access to these special menus, each journalist will receive a ‘Welcome Pack’ that includes a connectivity card and bottles of water. Furthermore, a QR code will allow them to consult information about the participating venues and their respective menus.
Among the highlighted restaurants is the famous Restaurante Botín, recognised as the oldest in the world since its founding in 1725. Other traditional venues such as Casa Alberto and La Bola are also part of the list. However, not only century-old institutions will be present; contemporary restaurants like La Revoltosa and La Club Sushita will add a modern touch to the event.
There will also be sweet options; two points dedicated to confectionery will offer typical Madrid sweets thanks to collaboration with renowned pastry shops like La Mallorquina and Viena Capellanes. These spaces will provide a representative sample of regional pastries, further enriching the gastronomic experience during this significant visit.
As a tribute to Pope León XIV, the regional government has decided to collaborate with the local association of artisan bakers to create a commemorative cake. This gesture symbolises not only appreciation for the esteemed visitor but also for Madrid's culinary traditions.
