A Sweet Tribute to the Pope's Visit
The arrival of Leo XIV in Madrid, scheduled between June 6 and 9, promises not only to be a major religious event but also highlights the gastronomic richness of the Spanish capital. In this context, Viena Capellanes, an iconic pastry shop with over a century of history, has been selected to represent traditional Madrid pastries to more than 2,000 accredited journalists at the International Press Centre.
Founded in 1873, Viena Capellanes won a tender initiated by the Community of Madrid, which aims to offer a unique experience to international media. The proposal includes a variety of typical sweets, two for each day of the event, from different municipalities in Madrid. Antonio Lence, the company's general director, expressed his enthusiasm: “It is a huge pride to participate in such a significant event for our city.”
The selection includes 14 specialties that reflect the cultural and gastronomic diversity of Madrid. Among them are the famous San Isidro doughnuts, bartolillos, and bizcotelas. These products are not only a delight for the palate but also represent the local culinary heritage. “The Community chose the sweets based on their historical relevance,” Lence commented.
Tackling this challenge has not been easy for Viena Capellanes. The company has had to implement complex logistics due to the expected influx of over a million visitors during those days. “The organisational effort is considerable; we have had to extend hours and reinforce staff in our shops,” Lence explained.
Despite the extra costs associated with this participation, the main goal is to leave a lasting impression on international journalists: “We want them to take away a magnificent taste and remember both our sweets and Madrid.”
