Pope León XIV begins his historic visit to Spain with an honour guard of military jets

This Saturday, Pope León XIV lands in Spain to carry out his first apostolic visit, an event that promises to be memorable for both the faithful and the country's authorities. His arrival is scheduled for 10:30 AM at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, where he will be received by the Kings of Spain. This trip will last six days and cover several cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife.

However, the pontiff's first contact with the country will not occur on the airport runway. One hour before his landing, as his plane approaches Spanish airspace, two jets from the Air and Space Army will intercept him in a mission that combines protection and protocol. This practice is common for visits by high-ranking international dignitaries.

The air escort not only has a ceremonial component; it also represents a clear demonstration of Spanish sovereignty over its airspace. The jets will verify the identity of the papal plane and maintain constant communication with command centres until the Pope reaches his final destination. For León XIV, these jets will be the first Spanish representatives to welcome him before he touches down.

Although this operation has been meticulously planned, details about which air bases will provide the jets remain strictly confidential for security reasons. The Spanish Government is already aware of the flight path the papal plane will take, but will not disclose this information publicly.

In total, there are ten jets on permanent alert within the Spanish air defence system. These aircraft are prepared 24 hours a day throughout the year and are managed from the Torrejón base. From there, all actions related to air surveillance in the national territory are coordinated.

Since this visit is a highly anticipated and not an unexpected event, there is also the possibility that two units specifically prepared for this mission will be assigned without resorting to the jets on permanent alert. This would allow those jets to remain available for any critical eventuality that might arise during that time.
