A new political era in Madrid
The Minister of Health and leader of Más Madrid, Mónica García, has taken a decisive step towards the 2027 regional elections by announcing her candidacy for the presidency of the Community of Madrid. This announcement was made during a festive event resembling an electoral campaign, where García made her objective clear: to put an end to the policies of the current president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, which she considers "damaging" to the region.
The chosen venue was the auditorium of the Paraíso park in San Blas-Canillejas, where the III edition of the La Madrileña fair took place. Accompanied by prominent party figures such as Manuela Bergerot, spokesperson in the Assembly, and Rita Maestre, spokesperson in the City Council, Mónica García shared her decision with party members and supporters. "After much thought, I have made a decision; I want to be the next president of the Community of Madrid," she stated with determination.
Despite the official nature of the announcement, many already considered this candidacy a foregone conclusion. In the corridors of the Assembly, Mónica García's name resonated as a solid option to challenge Ayuso, who has maintained a dominant position in the Madrid political landscape. With 27 seats obtained in the elections last May, García positions herself as a key figure to keep Más Madrid as the main opposition party against the PSOE.
Although Mónica García narrowly surpassed Juan Lobato in votes, the electoral landscape is not straightforward. In the last municipal elections, Más Madrid suffered a significant setback by losing councillors to the PSOE. However, this has not discouraged García; rather, it has motivated her to fight harder to regain lost ground and consolidate her leadership.
Mónica García's decision has generated various reactions both within and outside the party. Many believe that her leadership could be crucial in revitalising the hopes of the progressive electorate in Madrid. With a focus on improving the social and economic conditions of Madrid's citizens, she hopes to attract both disenchanted voters and those seeking real change.
