In an unexpected turn of political events in Aranjuez, a simple glass of coffee has become the epicentre of a controversy between the Vox party and the PSOE. Vox spokesperson David Esteban Fernández Domínguez has filed a complaint with the National Police against socialist councillor José María Cermeño, accusing him of assaulting him during a session of the Informative Commissions held in February.
According to Vox's account, the conflict began when a proposal was being debated that required the Ministry of Transport to conduct a full audit of the infrastructure of the C-3 line. In the midst of the verbal exchange, Cermeño allegedly threw a container of coffee at Esteban Fernández, who managed to dodge it. This act prompted other attendees to intervene to calm the situation.
Vox maintains that this act constitutes several crimes, including assault against public authority and attempted injury. The complaint details that Cermeño allegedly insulted Esteban Fernández by calling him “gilipollas” and “fascist,” to which the Vox councillor responded with “lazy.”
For its part, the PSOE has dismissed the accusations made by Vox, labelling them as “false.” According to their official statement, it was Esteban Fernández who hurled serious insults at the socialist members and even threatened one of them. The socialists have announced their intention to present witnesses to support their claims regarding the threats received.
Cermeño has acknowledged his inappropriate behaviour, which has led to speculation about his political future; he is expected to resign from his position as councillor this Tuesday.
This incident not only reflects personal tensions between the councillors but also a tense political climate in Aranjuez. The PSOE has hinted that the complaints could be an attempt by Vox to divert public attention from other more serious issues related to alleged divisions in municipal contracts.
