A decisive meeting for the security of the papal visit
The arrival of Pope Leo XIV in Madrid is generating an atmosphere of increasing political tension. This Thursday, an urgent meeting has been called by the Government Delegation, which will take place this afternoon, with the aim of fine-tuning the final details of the security arrangements for the event. The meeting, scheduled for 16:30, will include various authorities and agencies, including representatives from the National Police, Civil Guard, and Civil Protection.
The spokesperson for the PSOE in the City Council, Reyes Maroto, has not hesitated to criticise Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, urging him to get more actively involved in the management of the event and less in public appearances. “All the mayor recommends to the citizens is patience and remote work,” Maroto stated, who also highlighted that the people of Madrid have shown remarkable patience during the seven years of the current government.
Despite the criticism, the City Council defends itself by stating that they have been working on thorough planning for months. The Deputy Mayor Inma Sanz has reaffirmed her commitment to effective coordination among all the administrations involved. “The services are perfectly organised,” Sanz emphasised, who also accused the Government Delegate and other political sectors of trying to “tarnish” the papal visit.
The Government Delegate, Francisco Martín, has expressed his concern over some doubts that have arisen regarding the scale of the municipal deployment. In response, Sanz defended that the municipal services have demonstrated their capacity to manage mass events and assured that they are ready to face this challenge. “No matter how much it bothers the left,” Sanz added, “the visit will be a success.”
As the date of the most anticipated religious event for many Madrileños approaches, both the City Council and other institutions are closing ranks to ensure a smooth development. Collaboration between different entities will be key to ensuring that everything goes according to plan during this historic visit.
