Preparations for the arrival of Pope Leo XIV
The upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Madrid has generated a tense atmosphere between local authorities and the Government delegate. In a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, representatives from the City Council, the Community of Madrid, and the Episcopal Conference are expected to discuss the logistical and security details for this significant event.
Inma Sanz, delegate for Security and Emergencies and municipal spokesperson, has expressed her concern about the attitude of the Government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín. During a recent statement, Sanz claimed that Martín seems to be "very much in need of controversy," suggesting that his approach could hinder joint efforts to ensure the success of the papal visit.
Despite the tensions, Sanz has assured that the City Council will attend the meeting with a constructive approach. "We are going to work together to make this visit an absolute success," she declared. The spokesperson also urged Martín to set aside controversies and focus on his responsibilities, reminding him that Madrid faces serious issues such as violent incidents related to youth gangs.
Although an official agenda for the Pope's trip has not yet been published, discussions have begun regarding possible locations for the scheduled events. Sanz mentioned that the Castellana axis is one of the places considered due to its strategic importance in the city. However, she emphasized that any final decision on the spaces must be coordinated with the Church.
The planned meeting between the various administrations aims to ensure proper planning to manage what is anticipated to be a massive influx of faithful and tourists. Martín has underscored the need for "maximum inter-institutional cooperation" in light of this momentous event.
Sanz concluded her remarks by emphasizing that it is crucial to prioritise common interests above political disputes. With a recent series of violent incidents in Madrid, she considers it essential to channel all efforts towards ensuring both safety and logistical success during this much-anticipated papal visit.
