A Tumultuous Return
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, has sparked an intense political debate following her recent trip to Mexico. Upon returning to Spain, Ayuso recounted experiencing a climate of "extreme danger," which triggered a wave of criticism from various political sectors. The left in Madrid and the central Government quickly questioned her version of events, suggesting that her claims were more of a strategy to divert attention.
From the PSOE, Ayuso's statements have been described as "delusional." The socialist spokesperson in the Assembly, Mar Espinar, sarcastically questioned her situation by asking: "If the narcos were after her, why did they stay four more days at the beach?" This criticism adds to other accusations that Ayuso is trying to play the victim and blame the Government for her own mistakes.
On the other hand, Más Madrid, led by Manuela Bergerot, has also attacked the president. Bergerot stated that Ayuso should apologise for what she considers a public embarrassment and a source of shame for the people of Madrid. Additionally, they have announced their intention to request detailed information about the institutional trip and the circumstances surrounding her stay in Mexico.
The Government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, did not hold back in his criticism of Ayuso. In his statements, he accused the president of "shaming" the region and reproached her for spending days insulting and provoking Mexico before seeking refuge with a "mojito in hand." Martín emphasised that it is unacceptable to create controversy to hide other more serious problems.
As this controversy unfolds, government sources have indicated that Ayuso was informed about the security measures available during her stay in Mexico. However, according to these sources, it was her own team that decided to decline them. This has led many to question whether there was really a genuine risk or if it was all part of a narrative constructed to gain public sympathy.
Minister Félix Bolaños also joined the debate with sarcastic comments about the supposed danger faced by Ayuso: "Was the risk she faced the shortening of her holidays?" This joke reflects the general tone among critics regarding what occurred during the presidential trip.
