A scandal shaking Villamantilla
The small town of Villamantilla, located in the Sierra Oeste of Madrid, is at the centre of a political whirlwind following the recent accusation against its mayor, Juan Antonio de la Morena, known as Toni. The Prosecutor's Office has requested a 12-year disqualification for allegedly having appointed his sister to a municipal position, which has sparked intense debate within the Popular Party (PP) and among citizens.
The general secretary of the PP in Madrid, Alfonso Serrano, has responded to the criticisms and stated that, although he does not openly defend the mayor's innocence, there is a certain confidence in his management. “We have seen previous attempts by the court to archive this case, but the Prosecutor's Office has decided to continue,” Serrano commented. However, his words do not hide a growing distrust towards the Public Ministry.
Serrano also emphasised how curious it is that the Prosecutor's Office has reactivated this case after four years. “It is interesting to observe how this issue resurfaces right now,” he added. Nevertheless, it is important to clarify that the final decision on whether to archive or continue the case rests solely with the judges and not with the Prosecutor's Office.
Toni has been at the helm of the municipality for nearly two decades, and his administration had been considered stable until now. However, this situation raises serious doubts about his political future. The trial will take place soon in section 30 of the Provincial Court of Madrid, where it will be determined whether he is guilty or innocent of the crime he is accused of.
