A new chapter in the investigation of the chair
The Madrid Court of Accounts, under the presidency of Joaquín Leguina, has taken a significant step by announcing that it will conduct a thorough audit of the contracts related to the Extraordinary Chair of Competitive Social Transformation, led by Begoña Gómez, wife of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. This decision comes in a context marked by serious allegations and accusations that have placed both Gómez and her chair under public scrutiny.
Judge Juan Carlos Peinado received the official communication on May 27, detailing that the Court will begin to analyze several contracts provided by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). This analysis is part of the oversight plan for 2025 and responds to concerns raised regarding the activities and funding of the chair.
Through a letter sent to the rector Joaquín Goyache, a complete list of all contracts related to the operation and development of this chair since its creation until its eventual resolution was requested. Additionally, a supplementary report was requested to specifically identify those contracts affected by the allegations against Begoña Gómez.
According to sources close to the case, the contracts in question amount to approximately 123,000 euros. Among the companies involved are Alabra Comunicación S.L., Focus Events S.A., Bordados Trebor, S.L., and Atrevia Gp Inforpress S.L. The Court has expressed its intention to begin its inquiries after receiving additional information from the judge regarding which contracts are subject to confidentiality.
Begoña Gómez faces serious accusations including influence peddling, business corruption, misappropriation, and embezzlement of public funds. Although she was scheduled to appear before the judge on June 9, she has requested a postponement due to prior legal commitments with her lawyer.
This case not only directly affects Begoña Gómez but also raises questions about transparency in the use of public funds and the connections between politics and academia.
