A New Political Approach in Madrid
The Vox party has intensified its campaign in the Community of Madrid, where it seeks to wrest control from President Isabel Díaz Ayuso. With a provocative slogan, "Madrid, 2027, national priority", Vox positions itself as a radical alternative promising to change the political game in the region.
At a recent event in Vicálvaro, Isabel Pérez Moñino, spokesperson for Vox in Madrid, announced that the party will present a non-legislative proposal in the Assembly to demand that Spanish citizens be prioritised over illegal immigrants. "The wave of common sense is sweeping across Spain," Moñino stated, despite the recent electoral setbacks the party has faced.
The proposal includes not only the repatriation of illegal immigrants but also a direct criticism of the housing policies implemented by Ayuso. The president has tightened the requirements for accessing protected housing, which has generated tensions with Vox. Moñino openly questioned whether Ayuso's plan is to continue discriminating against young Madrilenians by favouring foreigners in access to housing.
Despite Vox's belligerent tone, Ayuso defended her inclusive and open model. In response to accusations regarding her immigration and social policies, she emphasised that her government will not deny healthcare coverage or support to any Spaniard. "In Madrid, you come to be one of us," Ayuso stressed, reaffirming her commitment to integration and social order.
As the municipal and regional elections approach, Vox's strategy could be crucial in determining its future political relevance. With a discourse centred on "national priority", they aim to capture popular discontent over economic and social issues. However, their proposals have faced criticism both within and outside the party.
