An unprecedented investment in health
The Community of Madrid has taken a decisive step towards modernising its healthcare infrastructure with a historic investment of €450 million aimed at the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital. This ambitious project not only seeks to expand the facilities but also to incorporate advanced technology that will transform medical care in the region.
The regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, presented the details of the plan on Thursday, which will add 175,000 square metres to the hospital. Among the most notable improvements are the construction of four hospitalisation towers, which are expected to accommodate up to 1,200 beds, as well as more than 400 consultation rooms. This expansion will strengthen critical areas such as Emergency and translational medicine.
The Emergency area will be one of the main focuses of the project, occupying more than 6,000 square metres. This space will be specifically designed to care for vulnerable patients and life-threatening emergencies, incorporating fast tracks and advanced technology to improve response times in critical situations such as strokes or heart attacks.
Díaz Ayuso emphasised that the new hospital will not only focus on physical expansion but also on digitalisation and technological modernisation. Systems will be implemented that will allow for more precise and personalised patient monitoring, advancing towards anticipatory and personalised medicine thanks to tools such as artificial intelligence and telemedicine.
The development of the new complex will be carried out in three phases. The first has already begun with an initial investment of €61 million, focusing on building facilities dedicated to Pharmacy, Radiotherapy, and Translational Medicine. The following phases will include new hospitalisation towers and an outpatient block intended for external consultations.
This project is not only about increasing care capacity; it also includes new facilities for biomedical research. This includes areas where healthcare and research will converge, focusing on rare diseases and complex pathologies.
As of today, the Gregorio Marañón Hospital is a benchmark in Spain with around 8,000 healthcare professionals. Each year, it performs approximately 40,000 surgical interventions, over 300 transplants, and nearly one million outpatient consultations, consolidating itself as one of the fundamental pillars of the Madrid healthcare system.
