Controversy in the world of football
The Athletic Club de Bilbao has generated significant political controversy following the presentation of its new shirt for the upcoming season. This design, which includes the silhouette of Euskal Herria at the back of the neck, has been interpreted by some sectors as an act of ideological propaganda.
The response has been swift. Parties such as Partido Popular, Vox, and Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UPN) have expressed their rejection of this initiative. Javier García, president of the Navarre PP, described the action as “unacceptable,” arguing that the use of sports symbols to promote a political agenda is an affront to Navarrese identity.
Vox, for its part, has intensified the debate by registering a proposal in the Parlamento Foral, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the shirt. On their social media, they have linked the design to extremist groups, suggesting that it represents a dangerous politicisation of sport. Furthermore, they have called on LaLiga and the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) to take action against what they consider an improper use of football.
In the face of criticism, the Athletic Club defends itself by arguing that its design has no political intentions. According to them, it reflects their century-old philosophy centred on players born or trained in the Basque provinces, including Navarre. This sporting tradition is seen by the club as a valid justification for including such a map in their kit.
Despite the tensions generated, the Government of Navarre, led by the Socialist Party (PSN), has chosen to distance itself from the opposition's demands. Official sources highlighted that Athletic is a private entity with the freedom to design its shirts and that it is not improperly using Navarrese official symbols.
‘Gure Nortasuna’, the name given to this controversial shirt, will make its debut this Saturday in a crucial match against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. The situation raises questions about how cultural symbols can influence politics and vice versa within the sporting realm.
