A design that ignites passions
The recent unveiling of the new kit for Athletic Club de Bilbao has generated a torrent of reactions in Navarra, where the inclusion of a map encompassing Euskal Herria, including Navarra, has been interpreted as a provocation by various political sectors. The shirt, which displays the silhouette of the Basque territory, has led parties such as the Popular Party and Vox to accuse the club of using sport as a platform to promote a separatist message.
The debate intensified when the PSOE, led by María Chivite, decided to abstain in the votes related to this issue in the Navarre Parliament. This stance was criticized by their opponents, who argue that it represents a lack of commitment to Navarrese identity. The spokesperson for the PP in Navarra, Javier García, expressed his discontent by stating that this action is a disregard for the institutional and cultural reality of Navarra.
For its part, Vox has taken more drastic measures by sending letters to various sports institutions requesting the removal of the map from all Athletic kits. Vox spokesperson Emilio Jiménez emphasized that they are considering legal actions to protect what they see as an improper appropriation of Navarrese territorial identity.
As tensions rise among the different political parties over this matter, a broader discussion also emerges about what it means to be Navarrese in the current context. The inclusion of Navarra within the Basque map not only touches sensitive political nerves but also cultural ones. Many citizens feel that their history and traditions are being ignored or minimised.
Despite the popular and political outcry against this decision, the Athletic Club has not yet issued official comments on whether it will reconsider its design. The situation raises questions about how sports clubs manage their image and the messages they convey through their symbols.
