A joint effort that transcends borders
In an unprecedented medical feat, the public Hospital 12 de Octubre has successfully performed three critical surgeries on at-risk babies, spanning three different autonomous communities in just 24 hours. This remarkable effort was carried out by the Children's Cardiac Surgery team, composed of four highly skilled surgeons who demonstrated their commitment and skill in extreme situations.
The first case involved a six-month-old infant who had already undergone an initial intervention after birth. The definitive operation was scheduled for a specific day, but the situation became complicated when the University Hospital of Toledo alerted about a premature baby born at 24 weeks of gestation, weighing only 600 grams and with a patent ductus arteriosus. This condition required immediate attention due to its complexity.
Despite logistical limitations, the surgeons divided into two groups: while two professionals attended to the scheduled baby in Madrid, the other two quickly moved to Toledo to perform the urgent surgery. Both interventions were successfully completed that same morning, highlighting the team's organisational capability.
As the day progressed, Hospital 12 de Octubre received another critical alert from the University Hospital of Salamanca. The national ECMO transport program (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) was activated, once again making it a reference centre for this type of paediatric emergencies. This system is vital when conventional treatments have failed and mechanical assistance is required for cardiac or respiratory functions.
Lorenzo Boni, one of the surgeons involved, commented on the pressure and responsibility that this type of procedure entails: "It has been a challenge for us, especially organisationally because there are four of us." The placement of the ECMO device is a complex task that requires not only surgical skills but also multidisciplinary collaboration among various medical specialists.
The last baby operated on, at just four months old, was stabilised thanks to the use of the ECMO system and is currently under observation in conventional paediatric hospitalisation after having passed through the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. The positive results reflect not only the skill of the medical team but also the importance of coordinated work between different hospitals and medical specialties.
As these little patients continue their recovery, it is clear that the commitment and dedication of the medical staff are fundamental to saving lives. This episode highlights not only the technological advances in paediatric medicine but also the collaborative spirit necessary to face complex medical challenges.
