A tragic night in Villaverde

The tranquility of the Madrid district of Villaverde was abruptly interrupted this Sunday night when a strong explosion shook a bar located on Villajoyosa Street, causing a series of injuries to those present. The incident, which occurred around 11:00 PM, left an alarming toll of seven injured people, three of whom are in serious condition.

Following the blast, Emergencias Madrid quickly mobilised 15 units of Samur-Civil Protection, as well as personnel from the City Council Fire Brigade. These professionals not only extinguished a small fire that had started after the explosion but also regulated traffic and assisted the more seriously injured for their transfer to nearby hospitals.

Among the affected, a man stands out who has suffered burns to the respiratory tract, as well as severe injuries to his arms, torso, and face. This patient has been intubated and transferred to La Paz Hospital for specialised care. Three other injured individuals with burns have been evacuated to the same medical centre, while an additional victim was referred to the major burns unit at Getafe Hospital. Two more were taken to 12 de Octubre Hospital and one was discharged at the scene of the incident.

The exact causes of the incident are still under investigation. According to statements from the duty chief of the Fire Brigade, Julio Rodríguez, everything seems to indicate that the explosion may have been caused by faulty repairs in an old cold storage room. This situation would have created an explosive atmosphere that culminated in the devastating blast.

As events unfolded, the local community was left in shock at what had happened. Neighbours expressed their concern for safety in similar establishments and called for greater oversight of the structural and operational conditions of bars and restaurants in the area.
