Ban on water consumption in Aldea del Fresno

The Madrid municipality of Aldea del Fresno is in a critical situation following the recent ban on tap water consumption. This measure, which affects all residents, was implemented on March 20 due to the detection of elevated manganese levels in the supply network.

The alert was issued after analyses conducted by the General Directorate of Public Health revealed that samples taken on March 18 showed manganese concentrations exceeding permissible levels. The focus of the problem is specifically located at a critical point: San Carlos street.

The mayor, Alberto Plaza Martín, has officially announced that the water has been declared not suitable for human consumption. This means that residents should not drink it or use it for cooking. However, its use for activities such as personal hygiene and domestic cleaning is permitted.

To address this crisis, the installation of a new disinfectant dosing system in the municipal reservoir is scheduled for March 23. Subsequently, new analyses will be carried out both in the reservoir and at various points in the network to verify if the dangerous levels decrease to safe figures.

During this restriction, the City Council has set up two supply points where residents can access drinking water: one located in the Town Hall Square and another in front of the health centre on San Rafael street. These measures aim to alleviate the difficulties faced by citizens regarding this issue.

This is not the first time Aldea del Fresno has faced problems related to its water supply. In 2023, a significant pipe break affected over 270,000 people in 71 nearby municipalities due to a weather event. This new incident once again highlights the vulnerabilities of the local water system and underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
