A recognition of women's struggle and commitment
On March 6, Madrid will dress up to pay tribute to eight exceptional women who have left an indelible mark in their respective fields. The Government Delegation in Madrid will celebrate the third edition of the 8M. 8 Women, 8 Reasons awards, an event that aims to highlight the stories of those who have fought for equality and have been beacons of inspiration for many.
Among the awardees is Henar Álvarez, a renowned presenter and stand-up comedian, who has used her ironic humour to address issues of equality. Her voice has become a necessary reference for her generation, conveying profound messages through entertainment.
Another prominent figure is Ana María Crespo, who made history by becoming the first female president of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain. With an impressive academic career, she has supervised numerous doctoral theses and published over 250 scientific articles, establishing herself as a fundamental pillar in the Spanish scientific community.
No less important is Nati Camacho, a symbol of trade union activism during Franco's regime. Her dedication to organising strikes for labour rights reflects the ongoing struggle for social justice and the rights of working women.
Posthumously, Concepción Escobar will also be recognised, a pioneer in international law who left an invaluable legacy in her field. As the first woman to head the International Legal Advisory of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, her career was marked by an unwavering commitment to Human Rights.
The humanitarian work will also be honoured with recognition for Emilia Lozano, founder of the NGO Somos Acogida. Despite being over 70 years old, Emilia transformed her personal commitment into a solidarity movement that helps young migrants integrate into Spanish society.
In the public sphere, Virginia de la Fuente will be recognised for her daily work as the operational manager of the El Pardo Dam. Her dedication ensures not only the safe operation of the reservoir but also protects entire communities from potential natural disasters.
Closing this inspiring list are two prominent members of the Security Forces: María José Vera Martín, a pioneering Civil Guard among the first female promotions; and Milagros Gómez, an active member of the Citizen Attention service. Both represent the best of public service, demonstrating empathy and effectiveness in their daily tasks.
