The Getafe City Council has activated the ACAR pavilion to receive hundreds of evacuees from Robledo de Chavela due to the devastating fires. The mayor highlights the city's solidarity in this emergency.
Getafe becomes a temporary refuge for those affected by the fires ravaging the Community of Madrid. Starting today, the pavilion of the Getafe Air Base (ACAR) will host hundreds of residents evacuated from Robledo de Chavela, who have had to leave their homes due to the uncontrollable advance of the fire. This measure is a response to the collaboration between the City Council and the Spanish Government, which aims to ensure immediate care and safe conditions for the displaced.
The mayor, Sara Hernández, has been in constant contact with the Government Delegation since early in the day to coordinate the necessary actions. “We have been in contact with the Government Delegation and with ACAR since this morning to coordinate the actions,” Hernández stated, emphasizing the importance of a swift response to this crisis.
In addition to ACAR, the City Council has also prepared the La Alhóndiga-Sector III sports centre as an alternative resource in case there is a need to expand accommodation capacity. Such measures are not new; during other natural disasters, such as the floods in 2021, Getafe also offered its infrastructure to help those in need.
Several units from Civil Protection have been deployed in the areas affected by the fires. These teams are collaborating with emergency services and providing logistical and emotional support to those who have had to leave their homes. The City Council has expressed its unwavering support for these professionals who are fighting the flames and assisting those in critical situations.
“What is happening is terrible, and Getafe, as a city that has always been supportive, cannot do anything but help these people in such difficult times,” Hernández declared.
