Significant investments for the future of the Retiro district
The City Council of Madrid has announced an ambitious investment of €9.3 million to revitalise the Retiro district during the year 2026. This project aims not only to beautify the area but also to improve the quality of life for its residents by creating more accessible and sustainable spaces.
A considerable part of the budget will be allocated to the works on the boulevard connecting Cibeles with Plaza de la Independencia. With a total of €3.9 million assigned, the works will begin this February. This intervention is part of the effort to modernise urban infrastructures and provide a more friendly environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
Throughout the year, residents of Madrid will notice significant changes on Calle Alcalá, where a central median will be implemented to facilitate the connection with the iconic Puerta de Alcalá. The City Council has earmarked nearly €4 million for this year and another €1.6 million for 2027. Upon completion of the works, two lanes designated for vehicular traffic will be reduced, creating a wide central promenade and a segregated bike lane that will promote more sustainable mobility.
Near the aforementioned boulevard is the Paseo del Prado, where significant renovations are being considered. Municipal delegate Paloma García Romero has confirmed that €575,000 will be allocated this year for preliminary studies, with a much larger investment planned for 2027 that will reach almost €4 million. The goal is to connect Atocha with the Paisaje de la Luz, thus facilitating access to major museums such as the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen.
Not only are the streets under review; attention will also be given to the Retiro Park. €300,000 has been allocated to adapt the puppet theatre within the park, and the current situation of the pond is being evaluated to determine what interventions are necessary. Last June, a contract worth €113,679 was tendered to draft a comprehensive project for its rehabilitation.
As this transformative plan progresses, improvements are also being made on Calle Doctor Esquerdo with new sports facilities under construction. Although some residents have expressed concerns about potential asbestos-related risks during the previous demolitions, authorities have assured that there is no toxicity involved.
Despite the visible progress in various areas, residents have expressed their desire for an outdoor municipal swimming pool for years. However, they will have to wait until at least 2028 to see this wish fulfilled; currently, €500,000 is allocated annually for three consecutive years to move towards this goal.
