An innovative initiative for pet welfare
The Community of Madrid is on the verge of a proposal that could transform veterinary care in the region. This Thursday, the political group Más Madrid will present an initiative to the Assembly that seeks to establish the first public veterinary hospital in the area, designed specifically to help families in situations of economic vulnerability.
Alejandro Sánchez, a deputy from Más Madrid-Verdes Equo, has emphasised the importance of this proposal by pointing out that many pet owners face financial difficulties that prevent them from accessing adequate veterinary services. "Prices at private clinics, especially in emergencies, are prohibitive for many people," Sánchez stated. The idea is for this new hospital to offer care 24 hours a day, prioritising those owners who receive assistance such as the Minimum Insertion Income or the Minimum Vital Income.
The lack of an accessible public veterinary service has been a recurring issue in Madrid. Currently, there are only a few university faculties that offer limited care. However, countries like Mexico and Brazil already have successful public veterinary hospitals. In Rome, the first one in Italy is being prepared for opening. This international trend highlights the urgent need to move towards a similar system in Spain.
Not only is the hospital being proposed; Más Madrid also suggests opening a second Comprehensive Centre for the Reception of Companion Animals (CIAAM) in southern Madrid. This centre would complement the existing one in Colmenar Viejo and help alleviate its current saturation. With a maximum capacity for 250 animals, this centre has been operating for 20 years and has reached its limit due to the increasing number of abandonments.
The data is concerning: each year, between 3,000 and 4,000 dogs and around 5,000 cats are recovered from the streets of Madrid, either abandoned or lost. Although the figures have shown some improvement recently, they remain high and reflect an urgent need to enhance the resources available for these animals.
Sánchez will defend these proposals before the other political groups during the ordinary plenary session in March. The success will depend on the support received, especially from the Popular Party (PP), which currently holds an absolute majority in the regional government. The combination of the public veterinary hospital with the new CIAAM could be key to providing effective solutions to the current issues related to animal welfare.
