Madrid demands urgent changes in the protection of victims of gender violence following recent murders

The Community of Madrid raises its voice for the victims

In an alarming context following the recent murders of women in the region, the Community of Madrid has made an urgent call to the Spanish Government to reconsider current policies regarding the use of anti-violence bracelets. The Councillor for Social Affairs, Youth and Family, Ana Dávila, has expressed her concern that these new measures are only aimed at recent victims, leaving those already under the system unprotected.

Dávila has emphasized that limiting access to these devices to only new victims creates a dangerous distinction between what she calls “first and second victims.” This categorization is not only unfair but could also put at risk women who already have existing protection measures. “It is essential to guarantee the safety of all women, regardless of when they sought help,” she stated.

The councillor did not stop there; she also revealed worrying failures in the current functioning of the system. According to her statements, 42 women have reported problems with the anti-violence devices, and there are cases where a victim has reported incidents more than 50 times. These technical failures are not mere anecdotes; they represent a real risk to the safety and well-being of those affected.

Dávila also criticized the Viogén system, responsible for the comprehensive monitoring of gender violence cases. She asserted that this mechanism is also not functioning properly and could be putting victims in even more vulnerable situations. In this regard, she emphasized the urgent need to modify current protocols to assess the risk associated with each case individually.

The situation is critical: three of the last four recorded murders in Madrid corresponded to cases classified as “low risk.” This data highlights the ineffectiveness of the current system and underscores the urgent need to review how these risks are assessed and managed. The Community has reiterated its request to the Government to implement significant changes before it is too late.
