Madrid prepares for a historic 8M: demonstrations and traffic disruptions in the city centre

A day of advocacy and mobilisation

On Sunday, March 8, Madrid will become the epicentre of the feminist struggle for International Women's Day. This year, the streets of the capital will host two major demonstrations that promise to attract thousands of participants, who will march under powerful and assertive slogans.

The first mobilisation, organised by Comisión 8M, will carry the slogan ‘Antifascist feminists. We are more. Everywhere’, while the Feminist Movement of Madrid will march with the mantra ‘Neither veiled, nor exploited, nor prostituted’. Both calls are designed to highlight the struggles and demands of the feminist movement in an increasingly complex social context.

As is usual in mass events, significant traffic disruptions are anticipated on several main roads in central Madrid. The City Council has issued a series of recommendations to facilitate mobility during this day. Citizens are advised to use public transport and avoid using private vehicles in the affected areas.

Below are the times and locations where disruptions are expected:

• From 10:30 to 16:00: Glorieta del Emperador Carlos V, Paseo del Prado, Alcalá, Sevilla and Puerta del Sol.
• From 10:30 to 14:00: Avenida de la Albufera, Avenida de la Ciudad de Barcelona, Paseo de la Infanta Isabel and Plaza del Emperador Carlos V.
• From 10:45 to 14:30: Calle Alcalá, Plaza de Cibeles, Paseo del Prado and Carrera de San Jerónimo.
• From 11:30 to 15:30: Plaza de Cibeles, Alcalá, Gran Vía and Plaza de España.
• From 15:00 to 20:00: Surroundings of Puerta del Sol.
• From 17:00 to 18:15: Surroundings of Plaza de España, Gran Vía and Plaza de Callao.
