A complicated weekend in Melbourne
The 2026 Australian Grand Prix turned into a real challenge for Fernando Alonso, who, despite his vast experience in Formula 1, faced multiple setbacks during the race. The Asturian driver, behind the wheel of an Aston Martin that did not perform as expected, had to retire from the competition on two occasions, which tested his patience and strategic skills.
Alonso shared his impressions after the race with the media, highlighting that the team had made several technical adjustments to the car. “We were trying to help the team and complete as many laps as possible. On laps 14 or 15, we detected an unusual problem in the telemetry and had to stop to make changes,” the driver explained. Despite efforts to resolve the issues, another failure forced Alonso to retire again for precaution.
Despite the difficulties, the Asturian showed flashes of his talent by making a spectacular start from seventeenth place to quickly reach tenth position in just three corners. However, it was during the following laps that he began to lose positions due to the car's limited performance. “The first lap is more instinctive than technical; I felt good and competitive,” Alonso commented about his start.
Although the final result was not as expected, Fernando remained optimistic about the upcoming races. “It’s always beneficial to get laps in; this was our first time doing the formation lap and deploying energy from the start,” he said. Looking ahead to the next Grand Prix in China, Alonso hopes that both he and his team can apply what they have learned and improve their performance.
Throughout his 25 years in Formula 1, Alonso has accumulated vast experience and self-confidence. “In my first year, I felt superior to many competitors, and this year is no different,” he stated with determination. Despite the current challenges with the Aston Martin, he still firmly believes in his abilities as a driver.
