A grand celebration at Puerta del Sol
The iconic Puerta del Sol in Madrid will become the epicentre of the New Year's celebrations, hosting an event that promises to be memorable. With a limited capacity of 15,000 people, the square will be dressed to impress to welcome attendees wishing to bid farewell to 2025 in style. This year, in addition to the traditional grapes, locals and visitors will enjoy an exclusive concert by the popular singer Edurne, who will take the stage on December 31st between 10:45 PM and 11:40 PM.
Aware of the large number of expected attendees, authorities have implemented strict security protocols. A total of 500 National Police officers and 160 local police officers will be present to ensure safety throughout the celebration. Four entry points will be established, controlled by police filters on key streets such as Alcalá, Carrera de San Jerónimo, Mayor, and Arenal.
Starting at 9:00 PM, the square will begin to be cleared for cleaning operations before the main event. Access will reopen at 10:00 PM, at which point a double police filter will be activated to ensure that no dangerous objects enter.
Given the scale of the event, there will also be significant modifications to public transport. The Madrid Metro will operate until 1:30 AM the following day, but will close its exits to Sol from 6:00 PM on the 31st. Nearby stations will be reinforced to handle the expected increase in passengers.
Despite these changes, night services will begin operating from 10:30 PM that same day. The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) will also adjust its usual schedule; thus, the last daytime departure will be between 9:30 PM and 9:45 PM.
Not only will Edurne be part of the show; the day before, on December 30th, DJs Quique Tejada and Toni Peret will liven up the square with their music from 10:45 AM to 11:59 PM. This new tradition aims to warm up the crowd before the grand New Year's event.
Apart from the festive bustle in Sol, Madrid will also host another significant event during this period: the famous San Silvestre Vallecana race. For this, road closures will be implemented around the usual route between December 30th and January 2nd, affecting various streets such as Candilejas and Payaso Fofó.
