A clean start to the year in Madrid
With the arrival of the New Year, the City Council of Madrid has implemented a special waste management plan aimed at keeping the streets clean during the festivities. This year, citizens should be aware that there will be no waste collection on either December 31 or January 1, both in the morning and in the afternoon.
The Council has called on residents and shopkeepers to not put their bins out on the street during these two festive days. This measure is crucial to facilitate the work of the cleaning team, which will be overwhelmed by the usual volume of waste generated during this time.
From the night of January 1 and throughout January 2, collection efforts will be intensified to properly manage the waste accumulated after the celebrations. This reinforcement is part of the special operation activated since mid-December, when there is a notable increase in waste generation due to the Christmas festivities.
During this 2025-2026 holiday campaign, significant increases have been observed in all collection fractions compared to the previous year. The collection of glass has increased by 30%, while commercial paper-cardboard has grown by 25%. Additionally, ordinary services have risen to 103, representing a 7% increase.
Madrid is also taking specific measures to ensure a clean city during mass events such as the New Year's Eve celebrations and the San Silvestre Vallecana race. For these occasions, special devices will be deployed with additional personnel and appropriate machinery. For example, during the Three Kings parade, there will be 162 human resources, as well as 67 mechanical means, including street sweepers and compacting trucks.
