An unprecedented event in the Spanish capital
The city of Madrid is in full swing ahead of the imminent visit of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for early June. The Government Delegation has called a crucial meeting to fine-tune the logistical and security details that will ensure the success of the event.
In this meeting, led by the Government Delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, and the Deputy Delegate Pilar Trinidad, the responsibilities to be assumed by the different entities involved were discussed. Representatives from the Madrid City Council and members of the Organizing Committee of the Archdiocese of Madrid attended. This collaboration is essential to ensure that all operational aspects are covered.
In addition to security measures, an increase in cultural offerings has been announced during the days of the papal visit. State-dependent cultural centres will expand their programming to enrich the experience of visitors. On the other hand, Renfe will also play a key role by reinforcing its services in both Medium and Long Distance, thus facilitating access to Madrid for those wishing to attend this historic event.
The special security plan is being developed by the Secretary of State for Security and will be finalised as more is known about the Pope's official agenda. In this regard, Francisco Martín has highlighted that an advanced team from the Vatican will soon arrive in Madrid to finalise details about the scheduled official events.
Despite the institutional nature of this initial meeting, both Martín and other officials have expressed their confidence that all devices will function properly. The Deputy Mayor Inmaculada Sanz has assured that key activities such as a vigil with young people and a mass at Cibeles are already registered. Furthermore, she emphasized that lessons learned from previous events, such as the NATO Summit or the Climate Conference, will be applied here.
