Madrid prepares to welcome Pope Leo XIV: how will the works affect mass events?

Preparations underway for the papal visit

The city of Madrid is in full countdown for the highly anticipated visit of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for the first weekend of June. With an estimated attendance that could reach up to one and a half million people during the Sunday mass, local authorities are working hard to ensure that the events run smoothly.

The central events will take place in two iconic squares: the Plaza de Lima, where a vigil with young people will be held on Saturday the 6th, and the Plaza de Cibeles, which will host the mass on Sunday the 7th. This decision was announced by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who highlighted that these spaces were chosen for their capacity to handle large crowds and facilitate the necessary logistical arrangements.

Facing an event of such magnitude is not without challenges. Almeida acknowledged that he had never seen a concentration like this in Madrid, which poses a huge logistical challenge. It is estimated that around half a million people will attend the vigil, which requires meticulous planning by the City Council.

However, the ongoing construction in both squares adds an additional level of complexity. In particular, the works near the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium could interfere with the established plans. To mitigate any inconvenience, the mayor has been in talks with Metro de Madrid and other regional authorities to minimize disruptions during the events.

Despite these complications, Almeida has expressed his desire for Leo XIV to explore beyond the historic centre. “We advocate for him to know all the realities of Madrid,” the mayor stated, suggesting visits to less represented neighbourhoods during his stay. This openness could further enrich his experience in the Spanish capital.

As the date approaches, both the City Council and law enforcement are ramping up their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees. Collaboration between different entities is crucial to ensure that this papal visit is remembered as a significant moment in Madrid's recent history.
