Footballer Leo Messi has donated 80,000 euros to help in the reconstruction of the western Sierra of Madrid, devastated by fires in July. The regional president appreciates his support and looks forward to his visit.
Leo Messi, the renowned Argentine footballer, has made a donation of 80,000 euros to support the reconstruction of the western Sierra of Madrid, which suffered severe damage due to wildfires that occurred at the end of July. The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced this generous contribution in a message posted on her official profile on X, where she expressed her gratitude and highlighted the desire of the people of Madrid to welcome the player soon to pay tribute to him.
The fires have left a deep mark on the region, with more than 1,900 cubic meters of charred debris already removed by local authorities. In total, around 550 cubic meters of rubble and another 1,355 cubic meters of plant waste have been managed, which is equivalent to more than 318 containers. To carry out this work, about 20 machines and trucks have been mobilised, and 65 containers have been installed in the affected areas.
In the wake of the natural disaster, the regional Government has implemented several services to assist those affected. On the first day of operation of the free Legal Guidance Service, 72 consultations were conducted, while the Employment Guidance Service assisted 204 people. Additionally, the offices dedicated to Citizen Attention have carried out a total of over 1,315 consultations, including psychological assistance for those in need.
Despite progress in efforts to control the fire, it is not yet completely extinguished, and Operational Situation 2 of the regional fire plan remains active. Authorities have reiterated that aquatic activities such as swimming or boating in the San Juan reservoir are still prohibited due to associated risks.
Efforts are not only being made to clean and restore the affected area; a significant reinforcement in home care for the elderly and dependent individuals has also been established, amounting to around 50,000 additional hours. This service has benefited approximately 1,800 people. Furthermore, nearly 437,500 kilos of straw and forage have been allocated to assist farmers and ranchers affected by the fires.
On a technological level, fibre optic connections are being gradually restored in the impacted areas; however, some localities like Navas del Rey and Chapinería still lack full service. To ensure connectivity temporarily, satellite units have been installed where necessary.
As recovery progresses after this environmental tragedy, it is crucial for citizens to stay informed about current restrictions and how they can access available services. The Post-Fire Assistance Points (PATI) are open daily from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:30 to 20:30 in various affected localities such as Villa del Prado or San Martín de Valdeiglesias.
