On August 12, Spain goes dark: this is the eclipse that won't repeat until 2053

The total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, will darken parts of Spain. Discover where to see it, timings, totality zones, and how to observe safely.

There are dates that are marked in the calendar months in advance and others that directly rearrange the holidays of half the country. The one on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 belongs to the second group: at sunset, the shadow of the Moon will enter through Galicia, cross the Peninsula from west to east, and exit through the Balearic Islands, leaving behind a few minutes of premature night. It is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905, and it is worth highlighting this fact because the next one of this kind will not occur until 2053.

Finding out where to see the solar eclipse 2026 with real guarantees has become the major logistical headache of the summer, and not exactly due to astronomy. Celestial mechanics has been calculated with Swiss watch precision for centuries. The complicated part is the other: hotels, roads, cloud cover, and that horizon one swears was clear until a mountain suddenly appears right in front.

A band of 290 kilometres that splits the country in two

The so-called band of totality measures about 290 kilometres wide as it passes through Spain. Within it, the solar disc completely disappears. Outside, even if just by twenty kilometres, the spectacle remains a very striking partial eclipse but without the magical moment.

The shadow will first touch land in Galicia, crossing through Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarra, and Aragón, heading down towards the Valencian Community and bidding farewell to Europe over the Balearic Islands. A path that, coincidentally, aligns with some of the best gastronomic areas of the country. Those who plan their trip well can leave with two memories: that of the sky and that of the after-meal.

The capitals that will be left in the dark

Among the cities within the band are A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Burgos, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Castellón, València, and Palma. In other words, there is no need to stand in the middle of a wasteland with a headlamp to experience it: a good part of the totality will occur over urban asphalt.

However, there is an important detail. The duration is not the same everywhere. In the central line, the phenomenon stretches to nearly one minute and fifty seconds, with Asturias being the privileged area, while at the edges of the band, totality lasts only a few seconds. A long blink, basically.

The problem is not the Moon, it's the horizon

Here comes the part that many articles gloss over. This eclipse does not occur at noon with the Sun comfortably high, but rather almost at sunset. The partial phase begins around 19:30 peninsular time and the moment of totality concentrates between 20:27 and 20:33, depending on the location.

What is the practical consequence? The Sun will be very low, between 12 degrees above the horizon in Galicia and barely 2 degrees in the Balearic Islands. Translated: any hill, building, row of poplars, or marine haze can completely ruin the plan.

That’s why the choice of site matters much more than in other eclipses. A completely clear west and northwest horizon is needed. Elevated viewpoints, plains, west-facing coasts, mountain passes. And check it before, not at 20:15 while running in flip-flops looking for a gap between two industrial buildings.

Aragón and the Ebro valley, the weather bet

If anything can ruin an eclipse as much as a poorly positioned hill, it’s a cloud. In August, the climatic statistics clearly favour the northeast interior of the peninsula: the Ebro valley, Aragón, and much of Navarra and La Rioja have some of the highest probabilities of clear skies in all of Western Europe at that time.

Zaragoza has thus become one of the major epicentres of the event, with fast train connections from Madrid and Barcelona and a surrounding plain that seems designed by an engineer for watching sunsets. The Cantabrian coast offers spectacular landscapes, but also a significantly higher risk that the Atlantic decides to send its typical layer of low clouds just that afternoon. The coast is beautiful. The coastal weather, less predictable.

What happens if you are outside the band

Nothing dramatic, but it won’t be the same. In Madrid, the Moon will cover 99.9% of the solar disc, a figure that sounds like totality but is not at all. That remaining 0.1% keeps the sky illuminated, prevents seeing the solar corona, and eliminates that sharp drop in light and temperature that defines the experience. The difference between 99.9% and 100% is not one of degree, it is one of category.

In Andalusia and the southern peninsula, the eclipse will be partial and perfectly enjoyable, although those wanting the complete experience have a second chance very close: on August 2, 2027, this time with the band of totality crossing the south of the country.

Certified glasses or nothing

Non-negotiable point. Looking at the Sun without certified protection permanently and painlessly damages the retina, which is precisely what makes it dangerous: it doesn’t hurt while it happens. The only valid glasses are those that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, and it’s advisable to buy them from reliable establishments because the counterfeit market is already in full swing.

Brand sunglasses, tinted lenses, old X-rays, or the trick of a scratched CD that someone might remember from childhood are also not valid. And something that is often forgotten: cameras, binoculars, and telescopes need their own certified solar filter, because they concentrate light much before it reaches the eye.

Only during the exact seconds of totality, and only within the band, can you look without protection. As soon as the first flash of the solar disc reappears, glasses again.

A double night: eclipse and Perseids

The calendar has decided to be generous. The morning after the eclipse coincides with the peak of the Perseids, the most famous meteor shower of the summer. Those who travel to a clear sky area to watch the Sun disappear can stay in the same spot for a few more hours and finish the day with the tears of Saint Lawrence.

Two astronomical phenomena in less than twelve hours and in the same field. It’s worth bringing a folding chair, something warm, and a red light flashlight, because the temperature in the interior peninsula drops more than one remembers when spending the whole day at 35 degrees.

Regarding accommodation, the warning is simple: international demand in the band of totality has been skyrocketing for months and spots in the most sought-after areas sell out very quickly. Improvising on August 11 with a loaded car and a booking app open is a risky sport with a predictable outcome.
