The National Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in Madrid, wanted by the UK for multiple sexual assault offences. The detainee had been hiding in Spain since 2022.
A National Police operation culminated in the arrest of J.R., a 37-year-old British man, in a central street in Madrid. This individual was one of the UK's most wanted fugitives due to his involvement in several serious sexual assault offences, which are believed to have occurred between 2012 and 2022. British authorities had begun investigations in 2024, when they started receiving reports about his criminal actions, including assaults on several victims, among them his romantic partner.
The arrest came after an exhaustive investigation that led agents to Benidorm (Alicante), where the suspect had initially been located. However, the surveillance continued until an international arrest warrant for his extradition was issued last February. This warrant was part of a broader campaign known as The UK Most Wanted Fugitives, driven by the organization CrimeStoppers and supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA).
Despite the strict measures J.R. took to hide, such as using false identities and leading a nomadic lifestyle, collaboration between British and Spanish police forces allowed them to establish patterns regarding his movements. The investigation included surveillance and trips to places frequented by the fugitive.
Finally, after receiving information about his possible presence in Madrid, a special operation was organized for his capture. During the operation, J.R. tried to disguise his appearance by wearing a cap and dark glasses; however, he could not avoid being identified due to his visible tattoos. Despite not cooperating with the agents or presenting valid documentation, an initial comparison allowed for his identity to be confirmed through fingerprint analysis.
The detainee has been placed at the disposal of the Central Court of Instance number 3 in Madrid while his extradition process to the UK is resolved. This case highlights the importance of joint work between different international police bodies to combat transnational crime.
