Police operation against extremism
In an operation that has shocked the martial arts community and society at large, the National Police have arrested two individuals linked to jihadist terrorism in Madrid. The action took place last Tuesday and is part of a broader investigation into radicalisation in sports environments.
One of the detainees was known as a MMA instructor, teaching classes at various gyms in the Community of Madrid. His background not only included teaching but also competing internationally under a sports federation. However, his public image contrasted sharply with his clandestine activities, where he promoted extremist ideologies.
The second detainee played a crucial role in disseminating jihadist material, acting as a link between radical groups and potential new recruits. Both face charges of self-radicalisation, indoctrination of others, and document forgery.
Throughout the investigative process, agents conducted diligent home searches, seizing not only a replica weapon but also relevant documentation that is being analysed to uncover further connections to extremism. Preliminary reports indicate that one of the detainees showed a strong adherence to global violent jihad, as well as marked antisemitism, evidenced by the content he consumed and shared across various digital platforms.
Through open social media and closed channels, both individuals spread messages that glorified martyrdom and advocated for the imposition of Islamic laws in Western societies. This type of activity has raised concerns among authorities about how certain sports environments can be used as platforms to propagate dangerous ideologies.
Following their arrest, both men were brought before a judge on Friday morning, who ordered their immediate detention while investigations continue. The operation was coordinated by the General Information Commissioner’s Office under the supervision of the Central Court of Instruction Number 6 of the National Court.
