A Historic Transformation in the Heart of Madrid
Retiro Park, one of the most iconic green spaces in Madrid, is gearing up for a significant transformation that will leave its famous pond dry for an indefinite period in 2026. This event, which hasn't occurred in 25 years, promises to change the usual image of the park and generate great anticipation among locals and tourists.
The last time the pond was drained was in 2001, when rehabilitation work was carried out due to leaks affecting its structure. On this occasion, the Madrid City Council has decided to undertake a comprehensive intervention aimed at restoring this iconic place, known for its beauty and as a meeting point for both Madrileños and visitors.
The works are scheduled to begin at the end of 2026, with an investment exceeding 122,000 euros. The project includes not only the draining of the pond but also the repair of its underlying structures. With a total area of 3.7 hectares and a capacity exceeding 55,000 cubic meters, the scale of the work is considerable and will require time to ensure that the pond shines again as it has for centuries.
Throughout its history, the pond has been drained on several occasions for various reasons. In 1982, routine maintenance was carried out; in 1939, it was emptied after the Civil War to repair damage; and perhaps the most curious anecdote occurred in 1964 when it was drained for the filming of the movie The Fabulous World of the Circus, starring John Wayne and Rita Hayworth.
As we approach the start of the works, citizens express both nostalgia and hope. Many fondly remember images of the pond full of life and surrounded by the majestic trees of the park. Expectations are high: how will this space look after its renovation? Experts assure that these improvements are essential not only to preserve the aesthetics of the place but also to ensure its long-term functionality.
