A community cry for change
In the heart of San Blas-Canillejas, a community rises to demand attention to its most pressing problems. The recent meeting convened by the Government delegate, Francisco Martín, became a stage for tensions and demands. Before the meeting began, Sara, a local resident, made it clear that the creation of this forum was not the work of the administrations, but the result of the collective effort of the residents. “This forum was requested in 2024 from the three administrations. It was not the Delegation's doing; it was the work of the neighbourhood residents,” she asserted determinedly.
The meeting takes place in an alarming context: just hours before, a young man had lost his life in a stabbing at El Paraíso park. This tragic event has intensified concerns about safety and social well-being in the area. Sara expressed her frustration at what she sees as a limited view from the authorities: “We are very tired of them saying it’s just a security problem.”
Despite being convened to address these critical issues, the Community of Madrid decided not to attend the meeting, arguing that their participation could shift responsibilities to the Government Delegation. This decision was criticized by Martín, who lamented that Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the regional president, was “on holiday in Riviera Maya” while her community faced urgent problems.
The president of the Regional Federation of Neighbourhood Associations of Madrid (FRAVM), Jorge Nacarino, agreed with Sara, noting that the issues extend beyond policing and include matters such as drug addiction and social exclusion. “We can put 100 or 1,000 officers in these neighbourhoods, but the social reality will not be solved just with police presence,” Nacarino warned.
As the meeting progressed, tensions between the different administrations became evident. Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida criticized Martín for acting late and only after the murder that occurred in the neighbourhood. Despite the delegate's announcement of a possible police reinforcement of between 8% and 10% for 2026, many residents left disappointed and pessimistic after the meeting.
As residents express their frustration regarding insufficient institutional responses, they have already begun to organise for future mobilisations. A new demonstration is scheduled for May 28 as part of the ongoing effort to demand concrete actions in response to a problem they feel has been ignored for too long.
