A crime that shocked Pozuelo

The murder of Andriy Portnov, a former Ukrainian politician, has taken an unexpected turn with the recent arrest of the alleged perpetrator of the crime in Germany. This tragic event occurred on May 21, 2025, when Portnov was shot dead outside the American School in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, while dropping off his two daughters at school.

The National Police have confirmed that the suspect was located in Heinsberg, thanks to collaboration between Spanish authorities and the Special Operations Group of the German BKA. This joint operation marks a significant advance in an investigation that had kept both the local community and international media on edge.

The attack occurred around 9:15 AM, just as hundreds of students were entering the educational centre. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots; nine shell casings were found at the scene and it is estimated that Portnov was hit at least six times. The swift police response allowed for the area to be secured and the necessary investigations to begin.

Authorities have indicated that there is not just one individual responsible, but that at least two accomplices are suspected of helping the shooter escape towards the Casa de Campo, a vast wooded area nearby. Judicial proceedings are under the supervision of the Court of Instruction number 1 of Pozuelo, where preliminary proceedings have been declared secret.

Andriy Portnov was not an ordinary figure; his story is marked by his connection to the government of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych between 2010 and 2014. A lawyer and politician, he was accused of corruption and had to leave Ukraine after Euromaidan. His ties to Russia led him to be investigated by the Ukrainian secret service and placed on blacklists for human rights violations.

Despite his controversial political career, Portnov managed to temporarily settle in Spain due to exceptional circumstances related to the current Ukrainian crisis. However, his dark past seems to have caught up with him even far from his homeland.

The arrest of the suspect has led to the issuance of a European Arrest Warrant and another European Investigation Order to search his home. Investigations remain open as efforts continue to clarify all the details behind the murder. The main hypothesis points towards a possible settling of scores linked to organised crime or political motives related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

As this international investigation progresses, many are wondering if this case is just the tip of the iceberg regarding the political and criminal tensions affecting both Ukraine and Europe.
