A 61-year-old man has lost his life following an explosion in a semi-basement in Moratalaz. The blast forced the evacuation of several residents from the affected building.
In the early hours of Sunday, August 9, a tragic incident occurred in the Madrid district of Moratalaz, where a 61-year-old man died due to an explosion and subsequent fire in the semi-basement of a residential block located on Hacienda de Pavones street. The explosion took place in the storage rooms of the building, prompting a swift response from emergency services. According to Roberto González, an officer of the Madrid City Fire Brigade, after the evacuation of the deceased, efforts to extinguish the fire that had erupted as a result of the explosion began. “We have been controlling and confining people in the residences of the building while ventilating the entire affected area,” González explained. To combat the fire, 10 fire units were mobilised, who worked diligently to ensure there were no further victims among the residents. Additionally, personnel from the Medical Emergency Service (SUMMA112) arrived at the scene to provide psychological support to the families affected by this tragedy. The National Police were also present to initiate an investigation into the causes that led to this fatal explosion. Such incidents are not common in Moratalaz; however, we recall that approximately five years ago a similar event occurred in another Madrid neighbourhood where a gas leak caused significant damage but no loss of life. Authorities have urged residents to be vigilant for any strange smells or irregularities related to electrical or gas installations. In this particular case, it is expected that the investigation will shed light on what happened and that preventive measures will be taken to avoid similar future accidents.
