Police operation against railway vandalism
In an unprecedented operation, the National Police has dismantled a gang of graffiti artists that caused damages worth over €400,000 to the Cercanías de Madrid service. Nine individuals, including two minors, were arrested following an exhaustive investigation that revealed an alarming pattern of vandalism and disruptions to the rail service.
The arrested individuals used a method known as ‘palancazo’, which involves activating the emergency brake to stop trains and carry out their graffiti in a matter of minutes. This procedure not only jeopardises passenger safety but also severely disrupts the normal functioning of the rail system. According to authorities, they are attributed a total of 107 crimes, including 90 counts of damage and 17 counts of public disorder.
Throughout the investigative process, it has been evident that the group members acted with an “absolute disregard” for public safety. The graffiti was quickly executed while trains were stopped, posing a serious risk to both travellers and railway staff.
Within the operational framework carried out between May 27 and 29, police forces conducted multiple searches and seizures. Among the confiscated items were portable circular saws, master keys, as well as numerous spray cans specialised for graffiti. Some spray cans have a high value on the black market, indicating the seriousness of the business behind the vandalism.
They did not limit themselves to graffiti; some detainees used spray cans as if they were blowtorches to intimidate passengers and guards during their vandalistic acts. This tactic demonstrates the growing audacity and danger of the group.
As the investigation progresses, authorities have expressed their gratitude to all those involved in this crucial operation to restore safety and peace in Madrid's public transport. The National Police continues to work hard to prevent similar future incidents.
