Unprecedented police operation against itinerant crime
In a coordinated action that has surprised public opinion, the National Police have dismantled a criminal organization dedicated to the theft of luxury watches in several Spanish cities. The operation, which began in January 2026, has resulted in the arrest of 34 individuals, including 33 arrested in Spain and one more in France.
The criminals had their main base in Barcelona, but moved throughout the country, focusing especially on tourist areas where luxury is evident. One of the most shocking robberies occurred near the Villa Magna hotel in Madrid, where a Mexican tourist fell victim to a violent mugging that cost him his Rolex watch valued at 36,000 euros. The method used was the classic 'mataleón', followed by a quick escape from the scene.
From January to April of this year, authorities have clarified 41 violent robberies, as well as a homicide related to these crimes. In one of the most tragic incidents, a victim died after being struck during a robbery attempt in Ibiza. This type of crime not only endangers direct victims but also innocent bystanders and drivers.
Criminal organizations employ sophisticated tactics to avoid being identified. They use false documentation to rent vehicles and accommodation, as well as covering themselves with caps and masks during their misdeeds. Once the robberies are committed, they quickly return to Barcelona to sell the stolen items.
Aside from the resolved homicide, authorities have recorded other crimes such as three serious injuries and a minor theft. Additionally, there are another 43 individuals identified who are pending capture. The operation remains active as efforts intensify to eradicate this criminal phenomenon both nationally and internationally.
