Tension in Usera: Serigne Mbaye and six arrested after altercation with police

An incident that sparked alarm in Madrid

On the afternoon of last Thursday, an altercation in the Usera-Villaverde district of Madrid culminated in the arrest of former Podemos deputy, Serigne Mbaye, and six others. The events unfolded around 19:45, when a patrol from the National Police decided to intervene after observing two individuals behaving suspiciously near a supermarket.

The officers approached to conduct a routine check, but one of the suspects, identified as Mbaye, chose to flee towards a nearby building. This attempt to evade identification triggered a scuffle between the former parliamentarian and the police at the entrance of the property.

As the situation escalated, a neighbour alerted other residents about what was happening. This caused around ten people to gather at the scene, creating a tense and hostile atmosphere towards the officers. In light of this critical situation, the police requested reinforcements to control the crowd.

With the arrival of more patrols, the authorities finally managed to regain control of the situation. However, the outcome was concerning: five police officers sustained minor injuries during the altercation. All those arrested face charges for crimes such as assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting authority.

Outside the police station, reactions came swiftly. The secretary of Antiracism from the political party to which Mbaye belongs described his arrest as an act of “pure and blatant racism,” while the Government Delegation firmly defended the police action as an essential part of their preventive work in potentially dangerous situations.

This incident has opened a debate about the dynamics between citizens and law enforcement in Madrid. The lack of cooperation from the individual involved has been cited as a key reason for the violent development of the event. The police intervention has been supported by some social sectors who believe that active surveillance is necessary in response to suspicious behaviour in areas where recent thefts have occurred.
