A forest fire in Almorox has forced the evacuation of several urbanisations and has crossed into the Community of Madrid. The situation remains critical, with significant material damage.
A forest fire that began in Almorox, Toledo, on Wednesday, July 22, has triggered an emergency that has spread to the Community of Madrid. The flames, detected by a lookout at 16:52 hours, rapidly advanced through pine areas near residential hubs, prompting authorities to activate a large firefighting operation and declare a level 2 operational situation.
The rapid spread of the fire forced the evacuation of the El Pinar urbanisation, where residents had to leave their homes while emergency teams battled the flames. Additionally, confinement was ordered in El Romillo, where residents were instructed to stay indoors and avoid travel.
During the night, thanks to the joint efforts of the Forest Fire Prevention and Extinction Service (INFOCAM) and the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the advance of the fire was halted. Evacuated residents were able to return home after being deemed safe.
Despite the partial return, the fire remained active and unstable. INFOCAM maintained its operational level due to the ongoing risk to people and property in the affected areas. In total, more than 19 ground and aerial units were mobilised to combat the fire.
As the fire crossed into the Community of Madrid, particularly affecting Villa del Prado, additional evacuations were reported in urbanisations such as Ribera del Alberche. The Government delegate in Madrid reported significant damage to approximately thirty homes in El Encinar del Alberche.
Apart from the human impact, the fire also caused significant road closures, such as the N-403 between Almorox and Cadalso de los Vidrios. Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel on these routes due to the imminent danger.
As efforts to contain the fire progress, teams continue to work hard to ensure there are no re-ignitions or new active hotspots. The weather conditions present additional challenges; however, the efforts made during the night have been crucial in limiting its spread.
No injuries or poisonings have been reported so far; however, recommendations include keeping doors and windows closed against possible smoke effects. In the long term, it will be essential to assess both the material and environmental damage caused by this devastating fire.
Affected residents should stay alert for new updates regarding their safety and possible temporary relocations as operations to fully extinguish the fire continue.
