This Monday, residents of the bustling centre of Madrid experienced an unusual morning when a helicopter flew over and landed in the iconic Plaza de La Luna. The presence of the aircraft, accompanied by a considerable deployment of riot police, caused alarm among neighbours trying to enjoy a few more hours of sleep.
The National Police carried out this drill between five and eight in the morning as part of their preparation for potential serious incidents near the Movistar Arena Madrid, located on Calle Goya. Through their social media, the police force communicated that during the exercise, detonations could be heard, which contributed to increasing anxiety among residents.
Despite the training objective of the drill, many citizens expressed their discontent over the noise disturbances. On platforms like X (formerly Twitter), comments such as: "Could you train at another time?" or "The noise is terrifying" could be read. Some users shared videos showing the helicopter stationary in the sky, illuminated by a spotlight, which heightened confusion about what was actually happening.
As the morning progressed, social media was filled with questions about the purpose of the helicopter and whether there was any real danger. The police reiterated their commitment to public safety by stating: "We train to protect you," although this did not alleviate the concerns of those who were abruptly awakened.
