A revolution in Madrid's transport
The Line 6 of the Madrid Metro, known for being the busiest in the network, is about to undergo an unprecedented transformation. In an effort to modernise its infrastructure and improve user experience, the Community of Madrid has begun testing new automatic trains at the CAF Track Test Center, located in Corella, Navarra.
With over 400,000 daily users, this circular line is vital for connecting various neighbourhoods and facilitating daily commutes. The new trains, which are set to begin operations in approximately two years, are designed to be faster and more spacious. Each unit will be able to carry up to 1,385 passengers and reach speeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour, representing a significant increase compared to the current trains.
One of the most notable aspects of this automation is the possibility of reducing frequencies to just two minutes between trains. This change will not only alleviate usual congestion but also significantly improve service efficiency.
In addition to increased capacity and speed, the new trains will include innovative features such as specific areas for bicycles and pushchairs, as well as spaces adapted for people with reduced mobility. They will also be equipped with chargers for mobile devices, air conditioning, and advanced video surveillance systems.
A relevant aspect is the installation of inductive loops for people with hearing aids, demonstrating a commitment to greater accessibility within Madrid's public transport. Automation will also enhance visual and acoustic communications within the train.
Despite all these technological innovations, Madrileños will easily recognise these new trains thanks to their distinctive exterior design: predominance of white with blue doors, thus maintaining a visual connection with the historical legacy of the Metro.
With this initiative, Madrid positions itself alongside other major cities that are adopting fully automated rail networks. However, before these modern trains are available to the general public, additional months of technical testing and necessary validations will take place.
